SC-ISAC 3rd Quarter 2015 Cargo Theft Report!

In 2015, during the 3rd quarter, the SC-ISAC recorded 207 incidents, down slightly from the 209 reported in the 2015 2nd Quarter Cargo Theft Report, but down 17% from the 250 recorded in the 3rd quarter of 2014.

Highlights

  • There were 207 reported cargo thefts in Q3 2015, down 17.2% from Q3 2014.
  • Over 24 million dollars in cargo was stolen in Q3 2015.
  • By month, July had the most cargo theft in Q3 2015. In 2014, August had the most cargo theft.
  • Warehouse/DC locations experienced the most cargo theft this quarter.
  • California experienced the most cargo theft in Q3 2015 with 37 reported incidents.

SC-ISAC 2nd Quarter 2015 Cargo Theft Report!

In 2015, during the 2nd quarter, the SC-ISAC recorded 256 incidents, up from the 228 reported in the 2015 1st Quarter Cargo Theft Report, but up tremendously from the 140 recorded in the 2nd quarter of 2014. The downward trend that was shown in the 1st two quarters of last year seems to have disappeared.

Of the 256 incidents reported this quarter, most continue to be reported as theft, but it remains apparent that the Identity Theft methods are very active, as well as some new LTL yard thefts and tractor equipment burglaries, which are, also, starting to show in the data…

In 2015, during the 1st quarter, the SC-ISAC recorded 228 incidents, down from the 259 reported in the 2014 4th Quarter Cargo Theft Report, but up tremendously from the 125 recorded in the 1st quarter of 2014. The downward trend that was shown in the 1st two quarters of last year seems to have disappeared. It will be interesting to see which direction the 2nd quarter of 2015 goes..

SC-ISAC Year in Review 2014 Cargo Theft Report!

In 2014, the SC-ISAC recorded 771 relevant incidents, down from 811 recorded in 2013. This analysis is the 2nd straight year the number of incidents decreased since the SC-ISAC started collecting cargo theft information in 2005.

Although total incidents were down, the fact that the last two quarters of the year had 454 incidents gives us a pause when speaking of continued decreases.

In 2014, during the 4th quarter, the SC-ISAC recorded 259 incidents, up from the 165 reported in the 2014 3rd Quarter Cargo Theft Report, but down from the 19 recorded in the 2nd quarter of 2013. An overall downward trend in incidents, which began to show last year, has continued this quarter.

The majority of the 165 were categorized as Theft, but the Fraud category remained at a higher percentage from the fictitious pick-up activity. Most of this fraud activity had continued to target food, beverage, and metal loads, although other commodities had been involved.

In 2014, during the 2nd quarter, the SC-ISAC recorded 140 incidents, up from the 125 reported in the 2014 1st Quarter Cargo Theft Report, but down from the 194 recorded in the 2nd quarter of 2013. The overall downward trend from last year continues, even though the incidents increased slightly from the 1st quarter of this year.

The majority of the 140 are categorized as Thefts, but the Fraud category remains at a higher percentage from the fictitious pick-up activity. Most of this fraud activity has continued to target food and metal loads, although other commodities have been involved.

In 2014, during the 1st quarter, the SC-ISAC recorded 125 incidents, down from the 182 reported in the 2013 4th Quarter Cargo Theft Report and, also, down from the 160 recorded in the 1st quarter of 2013. This downward trend is beginning to look like an evolving pattern as the numbers have continued to recede now for over three quarters.

The majority of the 125 are categorized as Thefts, but the Fraud category continues to take up a higher percentage from the fictitious pick-up activity. Most of this activity has targeted food and metal loads, although other commodities have been involved.

SC-ISAC Year in Review 2013 Cargo Theft Report!

In 2013, the SC-ISAC recorded 811 relevant incidents, down from 947 recorded in 2012. This analysis is the 1st recording of the number of incidents decreasing since the SC-ISAC started collecting cargo theft information in 2005.

We believe it is still too early to celebrate the decrease, as the trend needs to be established over a longer operating period.

In 2013, during the 3rd quarter, the SC-ISAC recorded 195 incidents, slightly up from the 194 reported incidents in the 2013 2nd Quarter Report. Of the 195 incidents reported, 23 of them involved fraudulent methods of pick-up.

Despite the upward tic from the 2nd to 3rd quarters of this year, from 2012 to 2013 at this time, there is an overall downward trend.
